Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2008-2018, Jancis Robinson MW, Jul 2008

1,270 bottles from 0.618 acre of vines averaging 36 years. This saw 80% new oak but today Étienne de Montille uses a lower percentage . Very light nose with a hint of putty. The first bottle was not quite clean – low-level TCA? Finishes rather hard. Pretty good raw ingredients. Second bottle fresher and fruitier, though not the most exciting Chevalier. (JR)

The exquisite 2000 Chevalier-Montrachet bursts from the glass with honeysuckle, mineral, and white flower aromas. Medium-bodied and broad, this silky-textured wine offers concentrated waves of spices, minerals, pears, and apples in its deep flavor profile as well as in its exceptionally long finish. It is a beautifully fashioned, elegant wine that is complex and intense. Drink it between 2005 and 2014. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083

High-toned oak and lemon drop aromas. Chewy and fairly dense, with firm acidity and underlying minerality contributing to the impression of structure. Not showing a lot of flavor (besides spicy oak) in the middle palate today, but has concentration and length. Spicy but not dry on the finish. This will need at least five years of bottle aging; Montagnon told me he would wait to bottle until the wood is not so dominant.
