Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2021-2030, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Oct 2021

A brilliant white vintage in Burgundy, and this just blew us away, even though it is 'only' a village wine - the majority of the grapes come from a 1.1ha of vines in 1er cru Les Chalumeaux which was downgraded when it was badly replanted in 1975 (under the previous owner). The two other plots are located in Lervron and Baudrières-Nosroy, and together make this a stunning wine, cleanly-spliced fruits, lemongrass and cold ash, with the slate tongue-scraping minerality of great white Burgundy. Opened on the night my website went live also, making it extra special. 20% new oak.

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes primarily from Chalimeaux augmented by other small parcels. This has an attractive nose of Nashi pear and hints of Japanese yuzu, very citric and very focused. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, Braeburn apples and light pear notes, not complex but fresh and with satisfying length.

Very bright and pure aromas of white peaches and lemons with a subtle, stony edge to the nose, too. The palate has a very succulent and juicy feel. Exceptional purity and concentration of flavor with very nicely wound acidity threading the long and on-point finish. Drink in the next six to eight years.

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village displays notes of ripe apples, white flowers and pastry cream, followed by a medium-bodied, pure and vibrant palate that will likely flesh out with further élevage. Like the other bottlings that were formerly offered under the Château de Puligny-Montrachet label, it's a touch more open-knit and precocious than I suspect future iterations under the de Montille label will be.
