Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2027-2032, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2026

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is dusty and floral, with rose petals, crushed violets, rosemary and the slightest hint of balsamic spice. There is a jovial lift to its soothingly round textures, as saline mineral tones support pure red and blue fruits. Lavender and wet stone reverberate on the refined, gently tannic finish.

Set to be released in the spring of 2026, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino pours a ruby red hue and carries more volume than usual without turning heavy. The nose offers darker berries and raspberries, along with subtle earthy tones that speak clearly to the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, with gravelly tannins, bright acidity, and tension that keeps it lively and weightless despite the warmth of the year. It’s an impressive Rosso and a great example of the estate meeting the vintage where it is. Situated next to the historic Biondi Santi, Jan Hendrik Erbach and his wife Caroline have been consistently raising the bar and making some of the most exceptional wines of the region at Pian Dell'Orino. The wines are held back an additional year or more, depending on when Jan feels the wines are ready to be released. They work biodynamically in the vineyard and make adjustments with regard to production, only permitting what they feel is the best expression of their property to go into the final wines. Each of the wines for this report were tasted at the estate in Montalcino.

Punchy and tactile, the Pian dell’Orino 2022 Rosso di Montalcino channels aromas straight from grape skins and pulp, evoking the immediacy of standing in the vineyard on a warm harvest morning. Raspberry and blueberry lead the profile, followed by a subtle palate pinch that brings an almost carbonic lift and playful tension. Fruit comes from the mid-slope section of the Pian Bassolino vineyard, contributing freshness and clarity to this high-energy Rosso. Production totals 5,332 bottles.
