A firm, explosive wine, the 2010 Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros Martinenga is marked by brisk tannins and a sense of classical austerity that is going to need time to soften. A host of sage, tobacco, red cherry, plum and mint notes open up in the glass, with expressive floral notes that add an attractive upper register. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2010 for at least a few years, as it is especially tannic, even for this wine.

Barbaresco. Palish ruby with orange rim. Ethereal, herbal cherry on the nose. Succulent cherry on the palate with a hint of cassis. Not enormously typical, but elegant and truly muscular on the finish. (WS)
The 2010 Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros Martinenga is the first "Riserva" wine made by this historic estate. Since only Tenute Cisa Asinari has access to fruit from this vineyard, the words "Monopole since 1797" were added to the label. I tasted bottle number 0164. This is a gorgeous expression of Nebbiolo that delivers impressive elegance, complexity and intensity. It has all the hallmarks of a great Barbaresco. Soft layers of wild berry and spice peel back to reveal ethereal balsam herb and licorice. The finish is silky, smooth and polished. Put this bottle at the back of your cellar.
Ethereal and lifted in the glass, the 2010 Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros Martinenga is impressive. Bright saline notes and firm, incisive tannins set the stage for a wine full of nuance. Sage, tobacco, mint, licorice and anise gradually open up in the glass, providing a window of what will develop with further time in bottle. Hints of orange peel, incense and spices add dimensions of complexity on the exotic, layered finish. In 2010, the Camp Gros is a wine of precision and class. I can't wait to see how it ages.
