The 2020 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru has a hefty reduction on the nose to the point where, at least initially, I am not convinced it will dislodge with aeration. Yet, returning to my glass after 15 minutes, the fruit is emerging: cranberry and pomegranate, blood orange and cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, fleshy and ripe, with moderate acidity and an opulent, clean finish. Like other Volnays, you can criticize this for lacking typicité and Pinoté, though it has a little more class than others in this flight. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, raw cocoa and sweet soil tones, Clerget's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil is medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with lively acids, supple tannins and a long, saline finish. Despite its elegant, polished profile, it also has plenty of substance to develop in the cellar.
The 2020 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed and matured with 20% new oak. This showed a small reduction on the nose that was difficult to shake off. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, good grip, a touch of white pepper and clove with a tingle of Shezhuan pepper on the aftertaste. This is one of Clerget's strongest cards played in 2020.
