The 2017 Volnay Caillerets 1er Cru, from 75-year-old vines, is the most powerful and inward of these wines. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2017 is going to need a number of years to come into its own. More than anything else, the Caillerts sizzles with energy and pure, unbridled tension.

The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets unwinds in the glass with suggestions of rose petals, red berries and citrus rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and a fine-grained, mineral finish.
