The 2019 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru comes across a bit "grubby" on the nose—not as clean and precise as the Clos de la Chapelle, perhaps with some Brett. The palate is bitter on the entry, with sour cherry and light earthy scents, and the finish is rather drying and seems to oxidize in the glass. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil is showing very nicely, mingling notes of sweet berry fruit and plums with hints of orange rind and spices, framed by a deft touch of toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and velvety, with lively acids and a bright, precise finish. As usual, this is one of the highlights of the range.
The 2019 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru, a monopole of the domaine, is completely de-stemmed and matured in 30% new oak. It has one of my favourite bouquets with gorgeous shimmering red fruit laced with rose petal and light incense aromas, all beautifully defined. The palate is slightly reduced but that does not disguise the intense, mineral-driven red fruit that merges into darker fruit and more saline notes towards the finish. A superb Volnay that will deserve 4 or 5 years in bottle. Ten barrels produced.
