The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots unfurls in the glass with a lavish bouquet of cassis, cherries, warm spices and toasty new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a rich chassis of chewy structuring tannins and a broad shouldered, generously extracted profile. This is a bold, powerful Santenots from Clerget.

Cask sample. Succulent, sweet oak aromas and rich blueberry fruit – luscious and mouth-watering, framed by quite grainy tannic feel on the finish. Substantial and engaging. (RH)
Bright red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, flowers and earth show a bit less lift than those of the Carelle Sous La Chapelle. In a rather closed phase today; chunkier, drier and less elegant than the Carelle but still finer-grained than its 2015 sibling, offering flavors of dark berries, medicinal cherry stomp and licorice. Here the serious dusty tannins arrive early, saturating the front teeth and incisors. Finishes with a suggestion of menthol reserve.
