Tobacco, smoke, leather and dark red cherries are some of the notes that inform the 1999 Barbaresco Martinenga. Deep, powerful and imposing, the 1999 is one of the more virile wines I have tasted from this site. The expressive, savory finish is quite attractive. I don't see too much upside from here, but the 1999 has enough depth to drink well for at least another few years. With time in the glass, the wine softens up a bit, showing some of the charm and suppleness that is typical of this bottling.

Bright red. Perfumed aromas of red fruits, rose petal and licorice. Leanish but bright and penetrating, with lively acids giving the flavors lovely precision. Finishes subtle, suave and persistent. The most accessible of these '99s today.
