The 1985 is arguably the first Monfortino marked by a changing climate. Rich and quite open, the 1985 is so showy today. Like the 1990, the 1985 is defined by its soft contours, ripe fruit, silky tannins and exotic, flashy personality. My only regret is not having tasted it as a young wine!

The 1985 Barolo Riserva Monfortino captures all of the radiance of this warm vintage in its creamy, open-knit personality. An unusually succulent, plush Monfortino, the 1985 is an undeniably racy, alluring wine. Licorice, sweet pipe tobacco, mocha, leather and cedar are all laced into a core of intense dark-toned fruit. The 1985 is not the most intellectual wine in this tasting, but it is among the most thrilling.
Incredibly, a bottle of Giacomo Conterno's 1985 Barolo Riserva Monfortino was next. What a privilege it was to drink – not just taste – these two wines side by side. It was a crummy, rainy Friday in New York City, with streets totally snarled in traffic because of President Obama's visit. If ever there was a day to take a little more time at lunch, this was it. The 1985 is a fabulous Monfortino to drink today. This bottle was exceptional. Bruno
The three 1985s were equally fascinating. The 1985 Barolo Riserva Monfortino was superb, but it shut down quickly in the glass after providing an initial glimpse of pure enjoyment. Such are the mysteries of wine. Still, it was a privilege to taste all three Conterno Barolos in the last (official) vintage that the Cascina Francia Riserva was made.
