Luciano Sandrone’s 1996 Barolo Cannubi Boschis was more open and accessible. Next to these more traditional Barolos and Barbarescos the fruit and oak were a bit of shock to the palate, but the wine was nevertheless beautiful for its delineation, detail and sense of harmony.

The spectacular 1996 Barolo Cannubi Boschis offers aromas of cassis, cherry liqueur, and flowers. It is dense, superb, full-bodied, with fabulous intensity as well as layers of extract. Muscular, concentrated, broad, and powerful, it demands 5-6 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. (773) 334-6700, and Estate Wines, Ltd., San Rafael, CA; tel. (415) 492-9411
The 1996, one of the estate's best, takes things to another level. It shows an outrageous, well-delineated nose of fresh roses, minerals and menthol followed waves of dark fruit and licorice flavors that are just beginning to show the signs of early maturity, with exceptional freshness, length, and harmony. This opens beautifully in the glass, taking on an almost Burgundian elegance. A wine to marvel over. It is hard to resist this now, but it will be even better in another 3-5 years, and age gracefully for another decade, and probably more.
