The 1989 Montrachet Grand Cru was in the unfortunate position of being compared directly to the imperious 2008. It has a mature and attractive bouquet with scents of crème brûlée, walnut and dried honey, a hint of acacia developing with time. The palate is smooth in texture with a smear of dried honey, a little buttery in style but that is counterbalanced by a fine thread of acidity. What is missing here is a sense of energy and tension. You get the feeling that it is not going to go anywhere nor developing into something special. Tasted at the mature white Burgundy dinner in Hong Kong.
Sadly, the 1989 Montrachet never comes together in the glass. The color is good and there are no obvious flaws aside from a less than perfect cork, but the 1989 remains monolithic and unexpressive. I suspect a flawed bottle here, which is a real shame.
