Medium red with a hint of development at the rim. Reticent aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke. Extremely rich, sweet and mellow but not currently expressing itself. This was bottled late (in June of 2004) and may not yet have recovered from the process. Comes across as a bit less bright than the Champans but this is just muted today. Best on the very long, subtle, harmonious finish. This was a knockout from barrel a year ago, and I am confident that it will eventually merit an even higher score. But today it's painfully closed.

(70% whole-cluster fermentation) Brilliant red-ruby. Initially reserved, pure nose exploded with aeration to reveal black raspberry, spices and minerals. Succulent, sharply delineated and solidly structured, with highly complex flavors of red fruits, wild herbs, flowers, smoke and earth. Finishes with very fine tannins and superb length and class. Here one senses a full expression of this vineyard's terroir

Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
