Da bere 2030-2048, FINE+RARE, Sep 2025

A blend of four parcels, half on the Chassagne and half on the Puligny side, Alvina’s Bâtard also combines younger vines (planted in 2016) with some low-yielding older material. There were three barrels in 2024, one of which was new. The wine is relatively closed at this stage – a stony, savoury intensity to the nose, and the scent of citrus pith. It’s on the palate, however, that the wine shows its quality – offering weight and intensity, a rush of fruit and power. It’s incredibly long, layered with creamy spice, and the oak reverberating on the long finish for now. With time, this will integrate beautifully. A serious wine that will need time.

The 2024 Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru follows in the footsteps of the knockout 2023. It has a wonderful nose with Granny Smith, freshly sliced pear, dewy meadow and light citrus lemon scents that burst from the glass. The palate is very fresh and focused, with much more intensity than the Bienvenues as it seems to relish the finish. This is such a great Bâtard Montrachet, possibly underrated by connoisseurs...but not by yours truly.

Quite pale in colour, a leaner style, then a bounce of pure crisp white fruit energy with a very lightly peachy touch. There is good intensity if not quite the full weight. I do like the aftertaste though, on pure white fruit.
