The 2000 Barolo Via Nuova does not have the authority of its more familiar sibling, but the perfumed aromas of roses, iris, and anisette and the soft, satiny texture are most appealing. Good full red. Musky aromas of nuts and truffle, with a suggestion of roasted fruits. Then leanish and on the dry side, with a faint green edge suggesting uneven ripening. With modest flesh, this finishes somewhat dry. A disappointing showing: this was much fatter and sweeter in barrel two years ago.
Medium red. Currant, plum, chocolate, mint, underbrush, minerals and oak on the nose. Fat, sweet and minerally, but less complex today than the Cannubi. Does it have the extract and richness to support its strong tannins? Here, too, the tannins reach the front teeth.
