Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2022-2024, Eric Guido, Vinous, Oct 2022

The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino lifts from the glass with an exotic mix of foreign spice, crushed rose, violets, cloves and a dusting of confectioners sugar. This is soft, verging on fleshy, held together by bright acidity with masses of raspberry preserve and hard red candied fruit that set off all the pleasure meters. The 2015 really shows the power of the vintage, especially with its potency, while tapering off to grippy tannins and hints of licorice. There is a ridiculous amount of pleasure to be found here. Drink up.

The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino is so deep and sensual, darkly floral and autumnal in nature, with plums, clove and cinnamon. Frankly, it's hard to pull away from the glass. This is soft and enveloping, displaying rich dark fruits and spice in a slightly balsamic yet completely fresh expression. Residual tannins make for a grippy finale, as the 2015 tapers off to blackberries and mentholated herbs.

The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino from Ripaccioli is a pretty Rosso to start drinking now, as the tannins have soften and the wine has started to develop up expressive nuances in bottle. Sweet dried cherry, tobacco, dried flowers, game and incense build as this racy, layered Rosso shows off its considerable clout. The 2015 is perhaps a bit rough around the edges, especially in its tannins, but it makes up for that with its persistence.

Canalicchio di Sopra makes one of the best Rossos in the entire appellation. I'm reviewing the 2015 Rosso di Montalcino now, although the 2016 is about to be bottled and will soon replace it (so stay tuned). This is an intense and generous wine that shows a richer and darker appearance compared to its peers. The bouquet is sharp, almost piquant, with beautifully fresh cherry and blackberry fruit. Those plump, sweet flavors are followed by crisp acidity. I highly recommend this great value buy.
