Mint, tar, pine and smoke are some of the nuances that emerge from the 2008 Barolo San Giovanni. This is a relatively open, accessible vintage for the San Giovanni. The wine gains density in the glass and also acquires darker notes of tar and licorice that add complexity. Still, the 2008 San Giovanni comes across as a bit more accessible than most years.

Good deep red. Exotic fruit aroma complicated by licorice, shoe polish and smoky oak. Juicy and penetrating in the mouth, with excellent energy to the savory dried herb and licorice flavors. Finishes firmly tannic, with a hint of sweet oak. Less forthcoming today than the classico.
