Today, the 1999 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is the most impressive of these nine wines from the Produttori del Barbaresco. Lifted and precise in the glass, the 1999 presents a super-classic profile of freshly cut flowers and bright red fruit, with some of the typical vintage 1999 austerity thrown into the mix. At fifteen years of age, the 1999 is at a great place of its aging curve and should drink well for another decade or so. Readers who own the 1999 should be thrilled, as it is gorgeous right now.

The 1999 Barbaresco Asili Riserva, very aromatic in its expression of mint, roses, tar, and wild fennel, offers excellent cherry and red currant fruit with sweet, long flavors and classy, elegant tannins. Drink: 2005-2016. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200
Deep dark ruby. Expressive nose of spices, crushed raspberries, cocoa, and tar with plenty of rich dense fruit and a gorgeous, long finish. A very complete and delicious wine with a bright future.
Medium red. Perfumed, pure nose combines red berries and flowers. Sweet but subdued on the palate, with insinuating flavors of strawberry, tobacco and flowers. Not at all a weighty wine but there's lovely restrained sweetness here and harmonious acidity. Finishes with very good length and grip. The Produttori's Asili bottling has been a sentimental favorite of mine back to the 1978 and 1979 vintages, and I'm still enjoying my '82s.
