The 2017 Barolo Ginestra shows a fine and delicate bouquet with aromas of wild rose and crushed flowers that are not common in this hot and dry vintage. The Ginestra vineyard in Monforte d'Alba maintains its character despite the unpredictable swings of this unruly growing season. The wine builds considerably more power in the palate, where it shows tight tannins and a 15% alcohol content. The bouquet shows balance, but this hearty vintage punches strongest in terms of mouthfeel. Some 16,000 bottles were made.

Conterno’s 2017 Barolo Ginestra is laced with succulent red cherry, menthol, kirsch, star anise and blood orange. Deep and sensual, with striking layers of nuance that unfold over time, the Ginestra is another wine in this range that will drink well pretty much right out of the gate. It is an especially soft, mid-weight Barolo from this Monforte site, and that's not a bad thing for readers looking for a wine to drink over the near and medium term.
Tank sample. Mid ruby. Hints of sweet oak spice and lovely ripe red fruits. Really scented and open. On the palate, richer than the Riva del Bric, more fruit depth to balance the tannins. Chewy, dry but not astringent. (JH)
