Many Barolos made in the difficult 2014 vintage outpace expectations. The 2014 Barolo San Giovanni is one of these. From a vineyard site in Monforte d'Alba, this single-vineyard expression is bold, complex and layered. The wine offers firm structure at the back with plenty of dark fruit, blackberry, spice and shaved truffle to keep your attention. The grape maturity is spot on, and it takes a lot of vineyard experience to achieve these results in such a difficult vintage. Only 4,500 bottles were made.

Monforte d’Alba. Tasted blind. Quite dark ruby. Savoury, suppressed oak nose. Fragrant cherry fruit with lots of acidity. A tiny bit sour but also long and linear, with lovely chew on the finish. (WS)
The 2014 Barolo San Giovanni is, as always, a darker, richer wine than the straight Barolo. The San Giovanni emerges from southeast-facing parcel, and while it is very different from the straight Barolo, I find those differences more stylistic than purely qualitative. The dark cherry, plum, menthol and licorice notes have more than enough depth to fill out the wine's powerful frame.
