Castello di Nipozzano's Chianti is made by one of the most ancient and noble Florentine families, the Frescobaldis. Their expensive wine is usually good, but rarely dazzling. This 1988 Riserva displays an attractive cherry, leathery, spicy, oaky nose suggesting the use of new wood barrels. In the mouth, there is appealing ripeness and plenty of tannin, as well as an austere finish. The wine is certainly good, but I cannot see it ever evolving into anything special. Drinkable now, it should keep for at least a decade. Importer: Paterno Imports, Chicago, IL.
