Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2015-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2015

A deep, resonant wine, the 2004 Barolo San Giovanni hits the palate with tons of black cherry, plum, smoke, leather and dark spices. There is plenty of tannin in support of the large-scaled fruit. The 2004 is ample and powerful in style. It has also aged impeccably, even if the French oak remains quite pronounced.

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2013-2021, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2007

The 2004 Barolo San Giovanni is a vibrant, layered wine loaded with ripe dark fruit and sweet toasted oak. Made in a gorgeous, restrained style for this producer, it reveals superb depth and clarity with a long persistent finish, all qualities which convey a beautiful sense of harmony and completeness. For the San Giovanni Alessandria used 50-55% new French oak versus 25-30% for the normal bottling.

Gianfranco Alessandria is among the young producers who continues to craft better and better wines with each passing vintage. These 2004 Barolos are easily the finest and most polished wines he has ever made. “2004 was a vintage like we used to have ten years ago,” says Alessandria. “We finished picking our Nebbiolos on the first of November.” Importer: T. Good full red with ruby highlights. Plenty of smoky, nutty oak and marzipan on the nose. Big and rich, with an almost porty ripeness but good definition and lift to the concentrated dark berry and medicinal flavors. Not at all overly sweet. Finishes with solid tannic structure.
