I don't have a huge amount of tasting experience with Lorenzo Accomasso's wines, but I do have enough to know that there is a fair amount of bottle variation. I was lucky to buy a phenomenal bottle of his 2015 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata from a shop in Rome. It reveals a light garnet color with a hint of shiny ruby deep from within. From there on, you are treated to a parade of extremely light and finessed aromas of small currant, cassis, blue flower and aniseed. I also got something that reminded me of celery root remoulade (just like my Francophile father used to make fresh). That note won my heart, and I happily drank the rest of this memorable bottle with a few of my lucky colleagues who happened to be visiting town.

The Accomasso name is the stuff of legend. A one-man operation, this tiny property in La Morra has developed a cult following. Now in his 90s, Lorenzo Accomasso’s Barolos are ultra-traditional, made with minimal intervention and rudimentary equipment – prized by a loyal and dedicated following.
