Neive-Treiso. Meaty and surprisingly backward, with hints of tar and dark fruit. Has freshness too, but bitter, firm tannins dominate at the moment. Still has a future. (WS)

The darkest of the three Barbarescos, the 2003 Rabajà opens with a captivating balsamic nose followed by layers of black fruits, tar, smoke, earthiness, menthol and toasted oak that unfold onto the palate with exceptional concentration, length and balance, closing with a fine, long finish. A big, powerful, expression of Barbaresco, it displays plenty of fruit to balance the tannins and is an excellent example of the full-throttle, extreme style of the vintage at its best.
