(some of these vines were planted in 1969 and 1970, the rest in the 1940s) Reticent aromas of citrus peel, white flowers, smoke and honey. Fat and ripe but rather unforthcoming, with dry, firm flavors of white peach, honey and fresh herbs. A serious premier cru with considerable subtlety and very good palate coverage. Finishes minerally, dry and austere, with notes of stone, herbs and spices.
Domaine Guy Amiot’s parcel of Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets is divided into two equal sectors, one planted in 1940, the other in 1970. The limestone-scented 2002 is a dense, medium-bodied effort with a deep, intense, concentrated, and powerful, fleshy character. Loads of slate, stone, and pear flavors vie for the taster’s attention in this outstanding white Burgundy’s complex core. Projected maturity: 2006-2014.
