The 1964 Barolo Riserva Speciale is even better. Here the breadth, power and muscle of Barolo come through loud and clear. While the Barbaresco says everything it has to say at the outset, the Barolo just keeps getting better and better in the glass. That, in and of itself, is truly remarkable. This is a great bottle of the 1964.

Bruno Giacosa’s 1960s are some of my favorite wines from anywhere in the world. The 1964 Barolo Riserva Speciale preserves quite a bit of brawn and steeliness for a wine of its age, with distinct earthiness, iron, smoke, rose petal and orange peel overtones that add nuance throughout.
The 1964 Barolo Riserva Speciale is powerful, dense and surprisingly structured for a wine of its age. Still quite deep and layered, the 1964 has aged exceptionally well. Nineteen sixty four is remembered as a year of both very high quality and generous yields.
I had never tasted Bruno Giacosa’s 1964 Barolo Riserva Speciale. It was a very beautiful, delicate Barolo with pretty notes of mint, anise, licorice and beef bouillon. It showed greater structure and power than the Bartolo Mascarello that followed. Unfortunately this wine was never better than when it was first opened. With time it lost some of its freshness and sheer sexiness.
