Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2023-2040, Neal Martin, Aug 2021

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru is well-defined and focused on the vibrant nose, offering orchard fruit and green apple scents and revealing touches of crushed stone with aeration – a Chassagne you might assume comes from higher up the slope. The taut, focused palate is well-defined with a keen bead of acidity and good fruit concentration, but it is the mineral tension on the finish that really lifts this Chassagne-Montrachet to the next level. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Moreau's 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot has turned out brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of pear, white flowers, blanched almonds, lime zest and iodine. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with superb concentration, excellent tension at the core and a long, racy finish. This is the finest Morgeot I've tasted from the 2017 vintage. And as I wrote last year, this is very much a wine to forget in the cellar while drinking the domaine's more precocious premiers crus, as it is built for the long haul.

30- to 90-year-old vines planted at 10,000 vines/ha at 220–280 m. Yields 30–50 hl/ha. Spontaneous fermentation in barrel, aged 12 months in oak and six months in tank. TA 6.5 g/l, pH 3.25. Bottled March 2019. Chalky and tense. Very savoury – perhaps the leanest, raciest wine here and the most youthful. (JR)
