The 2004 Barolo Riserva Persiera comes across as heavy, overly concentrated and lacking balance. Early signs of oxidation suggest the Riserva saw too much time in oak. This isn't anywhere as interesting a bottle as Saffirio's finest efforts.

Monforte d'Alba. Deep ruby with only the firsts signs of orange. Pure liquorice and browning apple. Slightly stale fruit palate without a lot of tension. Looks tired. (WS)
Montforte d'Alba, barrique 24 months. Ripe and dark, plenty of oak spice and a slight medicinal note, like throat pastilles. Sweet and rounded and not very Nebbiolo, except perhaps for the firm tannins. (JH)
