The 1999 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè comes across as a bit rough around the edges, but it has aged well. With time in the glass, the Pajè becomes more and more compelling as the aromas and flavors seem to literally blossom from a wall of imposing tannin. Crushed flowers, tobacco, mint, eucalyptus and earthiness are all supported by firm, slightly coarse tannins. The flavors turn darker and more intensely balsamic over time, with attractive red plum, cherry, menthol, spices and licorice overtones that add complexity. There is an austerity in the Pajè that is impossible to miss.

Dark ruby. Expressive nose of wet earth, spices, and prunes. Plenty of dark dense fruit flavors and balsamic note on the long, nuanced finish. Shows terrific balance. Austere but beautiful.
Medium red. Rather closed on the nose, showing a good bit of oak as well as herbal and olive nuances. Then thick, superripe and impressively sweet in the mouth, but not especially fruity. Conveys an impression of roasted ripeness.
