The 1993 Montrachet is an absolutely stunning wine with which to kick off this dinner. Subtle and wonderfully nuanced, especially in its aromatic depth, the 1993 is simply exquisite. Gentle hints of apricot, chamomile and dried flowers all grace the 1993, a Montrachet that is gently mellowed by age and peaking today. This is a fabulous bottle. Tasted at the DRC Montrachet charity event in New York.

The 1993 Montrachet Grand Cru is a perplexing wine, at least based on this showing. It has a mercurial bouquet with a robust grilled walnut scent, very smoky (autumn bonfire) with a strong seawater, almost marsh-like scent. After a while it reminds me of a mature Tokaji, but something like a 3 or 4-Puttonyos rather than 5 or 6-Puttonyos. The palate is slightly flor-like on the entry, very nutty again, but clarifying and gaining cohesion with aeration. It is a perplexing wine, almost as if Aubert de Villaine decided to dabble with natural winemaking - perish the thought! Yet I still find myself enjoying it. 3,535 bottles produced. Tasted at the Romanée-Conti dinner at the Connaught Hotel.

Resolved yet attractive, the 1993 Montrachet has held up well for a wine of its age. If anything, the wine’s power and overall intensity are both pretty remarkable for a wine of its age. Scents of dried pear, roasted nuts and smoke add nuance throughout. Although the 1993 has held up well, any remaining bottles need to be drunk.
