Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2022-2035, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jun 2019

The Mauro Molino 2015 Barolo Conca is the most impressive and firmly compact of the wines presented this year from this estate in the picturesque, hilltop village of La Morra. Indeed, this wine showcases the textbook La Morra characteristics of fine fruit, elegant tannins and an elongated, streamlined mouthfeel. This Barolo floats forward over the palate with the grace of a snowy egret. It shows a glossy and polished approach that merits pause and consideration. Fermentation is in stainless steel and aging takes place in barrique. A mere 3,068 bottles were released.

La Morra. Tasted blind. Mid to deep ruby. Serious, captivating, minerally nose while the fruit has taken a back seat for the moment. Bags of grainy tannins and subdued fruit wrapped up in soft oak notes. Gripping finish with hints of creamy oak notes offsetting concentrated fruit. A wonderful balancing act. (WS)

A more modern feel to the nose here with a layer of toasty oak sitting across abundant spiced red-cherry aromas. The palate has a handy array of fine, succulent tannins that carry a long thread of rich, fresh red-plum and cherry flavor. Juicy and intense Barolo. Try from 2022.

La Morra. This plot of the Conca cru has been part of the estate from its inception and has a full southern exposition. The microclimate is therefore warmer than Bricco Luciani, ‘and makes it look like a Barolo from Monforte d’Alba resulting in deeper, more structured wines. This is our flagship wine.’ 50-year-old vines. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Oaky at first and then balsamic with notes of liquorice and showing sensational depth. Needs lots of aeration to reveal this. Patience is required. Minerally too. For such an allegedly warm, sheltered vineyard this is an amazingly balanced yet concentrated wine with sweet, clayey tannins. The comparison with Monforte d’Alba is not wrong. Very youthful but already showing great promise and displaying such fantastic balance. (WS)
