Rose petals, tar, licorice and bright red stone fruits lift from the glass in the 2010 Barolo Prapò. This is an especially floral Prapò. Here, too, the structure is implied rather than overly stated. Hints of licorice, tobacco, orange peel, star anise and smoke add complexity on the mid-weight, super-classic finish. This is an utterly exquisite, polished, totally beguiling Barolo from Sergio Germano. The Prapò was aged in 20 and 25 hectoliter casks.

Revving up with licorice, spice and dark fruit, the 2010 Barolo Prapo most certainly delivers the goods. This wine awards a deeply satisfying and meditative drinking experience thanks to its smooth entry and the ever-changing nature of the bouquet. Ripe fruit transitions to forest floor, white truffle, cola, dark spice and fragrant anisette. In the mouth, the wine is silky smooth but it also shows its inherent strength and longevity. I ages for two years in botte grande. Drink: 2017-2028. Various American importers, including: Oliver McCrum Wines, www.omwines.com; Volio Vino, www.voliovino.com
Serralunga d’Alba. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury more than fruity on the nose or perhaps just a little closed. Well-balanced crunchy red fruit palate with a lively concentrated finish with lots to chew on. Intense yet elegant. (WS)
Serralunga d'Alba. Just mid ruby with bricky rim. Focused, lifted perfumed nose. The ripe fruit is framed matched by gripping, ripe tannins. Just the right amount of acidity. Lots of character. (WS)
