Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2025-2040, Jeb Dunnuck, Sep 2025

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Iacopo shows a deeper ruby hue and greater intensity than the Ignaccio bottling. Aromas of ripe cherry, lavender, graphite, mint, and forest floor lift from the glass. Medium-bodied yet impressively structured, it carries fine, ripe tannins and a core of pure, resonant fruit that drives through a long finish. Already outstanding, it should continue to drink beautifully for the next 15 years.

Mid to deep ruby. Deep, concentrated and alluring black-fruit nose with touches of mace and, although this wine hasn’t seen any new oak, hints of cinnamon bark. Fantastic balance between full cherry/dark-berried fruit and supple acidity. Fine tannic grip which builds up on the finish. Noticeably full-bodied, deep and polished, and in need of more time. (WS)

The first vintage of this special bottling, a selection of casks by son Jacopo Mori for a longer life and more similarity to Brunello itself, was as recent as 2019. Darker than Ignaccio. Intense with balsam notes and even more youthful. Concentrated, it positively vibrates. Exciting! (JR)

Alessandro Mori makes two Rosso di Montalcino wines, and the difference between them comes down to the selection of barrels used in the final blend. The Il Marroneto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Iacopo has a special story because Alessandro asked his son Iacopo to choose the one barrel that becomes this wine. That process was initiated in 2019 and has been the impetus for this wine ever since. With that first vintage, Iacopo selected a barrel with a slightly darker-colored wine, lots of blackcurrant intensity and a textural profile that veers more toward Brunello than it does Rosso. He has looked to re-create those characteristics in all the vintages to follow. This is a ramped-up expression of Sangiovese with energy, youthful fruit, cassis and blood orange.
