Cavallotto's 2007 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is opulent and racy in the glass. The ripe style of the year might be too much for classicists, but there is an intensity to the Vignolo that is hard to resist. There is nothing intellectual or ponderous here, just a big, voluptuous Barolo that captures the personality of the vintage. Even with all of its obvious resonance and generosity, the tannins remain very much present, which suggests the 2007 has many years of fine drinking head of it.

Castiglione Falletto. Mid red with some rust at the rim. Sweet, evolved nose. Very flattering indeed at first with lots of pungent fruit and smoke and then refined tannins on the finish. Lean and smooth on the palate. (JR)
Cavallotto releases its Riserva expressions later than most. The beautiful 2007 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is a generous and masculine wine with aromas of cured beef, bresaola, tobacco, leather and dark fruit. It is thick and round on the finish and moves slowly over the palate powered by its sheer heft and persistency. The wine is built to last but the softness of the fruit opens the drinking window to near-term enjoyment as well. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.
