The Figli Luigi Oddero 2020 Barolo represents a blend of fruit from four sites: Rive in La Morra, Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto and both Baudana and Broglio in Serralunga d'Alba. Rive has southern exposures and deep soils with a mix of sand and clay; Scarrone has white limestone sand soils with old vines on well-draining, steep slopes; Baudana enjoys southern exposures; and Broglio has cooler east and southeastern exposures. Broglio in particular adds color and tannic power to the wine. In fact, 45% of the blend is represented by Serralunga d'Alba, which gives the wine a powerful backbone. La Morra and Castiglione Falletto add aromas and softer contouring. I would put this Barolo on the darker, bolder and certainly more structured side of the spectrum.

Deep ruby in color, the 2020 Barolo has a wonderfully pure nose of dried cranberries, grenadine, roses, cedar, and spice. Medium-bodied, this classic and well-balanced red has an approachable feel in this vintage, with ripe tannins, and it retains good freshness throughout, although the acidity is not pronounced. It’s a well-done wine that’s going to drink well over the coming 10 years.
Grapes came from La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba. Lustrous mid ruby. Fine, peppery nose of red fruit, but still very closed. On the palate the firm tannic load manages to integrate with the savoury juicy red fruit. Very long and ends a little vibrant and with tannic grip. Elegant and energetic. (WS)
