The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is a total pleasure. Violets give way to radiant black cherries, cedary spice and wet stone on the nose. The palate is smooth but lifted and precise, with tantalizing acidity guiding ripe red and blue fruits. Remarkably pure but potent, the 2022 leaves a saturation of licorice and clove that adds a pleasant bitter chew to the long, gently tannic finish. Few producers could deliver this level of finesse and grace from a vintage like 2022.

From a brutally challenging year marked by near-desert conditions and an unusually early green harvest, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino still marries richness with surprising freshness. It offers a beautiful perfume of ripe cherries, dried herbs, and dried purple flowers. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, with ripe tannins, a touch of dry extract, and refreshing acidity that’s notably bright for the vintage. It should drink beautifully for years. Drink 2026-2040. Founded by Piero Palmucci in 1989, Poggio di Sotto in Castelnuovo dell’Abate now has 20 hectares under vine. The vineyards are between 200 and 450 meters in elevation, with predominantly southwest exposure. The estate has been under the management of Colle Massari Wine Estates, led by winemaker Luca Marrone, since 2011. Farming and viticulture are entirely organic across the Colle Massari Wine Estates, which include Gratamacco, and as of the 2016 vintage, San Giorgio, also in Montalcino. Luca continues to maintain and uphold the philosophy of their late consultant Giulio Gambelli, who famously championed classic expressions of Sangiovese with translucency and high complexity. Only large 70-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks are utilized for slow fermentations as well as aging, without temperature control, and with long maceration times for slow and low extraction.
The organic Poggio di Sotto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino could easily be mistaken for a Brunello, and a very good one at that, thanks to its depth, polish and composure. The wine offers a clear preview of the 2022 vintage with dark fruit aromas and medium- to full-bodied concentration, framed by a sweet, open texture that is neatly lifted by fresh acidity. Sourced from vineyards across the estate’s 20 hectares, this Rosso reflects Poggio di Sotto’s uncompromising standards in both farming and fruit selection, resulting in a release of 28,000 bottles plus larger formats.
