Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2019-2027, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2017

The 2012 Barolo Fossati is the most austere and compact of these single vineyard Barolos, as it often is. Once again, the Fossati does not make a convincing case it is worthy of being bottled as a vineyard designate. Iron, smoke, wild cherries and dried flowers and unyielding tannins are some of the signatures in this one-dimensional Barolo.

The 2012 Barolo Fossati is slightly more inward-looking and introspective compared to the other cru expressions presented this vintage. The Fossati vineyard is characterized by sandy soils and the wines made here veer towards extreme elegance and finesse. Indeed, this Barolo walks with light footsteps. The bouquet releases wild berry fruit, white cherry and dry licorice root. The wine will take on more volume and power as it continues its bottle evolution.

Barolo. Maturing ruby with orange tinges. A tiny bit singed on the nose and with a hint of leather. The fruit on the palate seems to have been pushed for ripeness. A little dry on the finish, but already accessible. (WS)
