Palish amber-edged red. Musky aromas of slightly stewed red fruits, leather and luncheon meats. Very ripe, sweet and smooth, with musky red fruit flavors showing a lush texture but not nearly the energy of the 2008. Big and broad but a bit nutty and high-toned and evolving much more quickly than the 2008. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good length. I'd opt to enjoy this over the next several years.

The 2007 Barolo Riserva Lazzarito is heavy and overly oaked. There is plenty of density and pure power in the glass but not much in the way of finesse. Dried cherry, plum tobacco and worn-in leather inform a finish that is already quite tertiary and headed towards maturity. Lazzarito is one of Piedmont's great sites, but the 2007 is overdone. I much preferred Germano's 2009s, which seem made with a lighter hand.

The 2007 Barolo Riserva Lazzarito is a gorgeous wine that does a wonderful job of portraying the bold and powerful side of the Nebbiolo grape. Ever-changing aromas of red fruit, cassis, chopped mint, licorice, cola and smoked cedar give the wine elegance and poise. It shows beautiful fleshiness and roundness that is in line with the best offerings from the 2007 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028. Serralunga d’Alba. Just mid ruby with a pale orange rim. Sweet and hugely concentrated and just holds back before going over the top. Rich, ripe tactile tannins and just enough acidity. Powerful, ageworthy stuff. (WS)
