There's such precision on these Samuel Billaud wines, finely scented with lemon and herbs but the main impression is minerally stone dust. Sour-fresh and creamy on the palate. Pure, chiselled but not austere. Chalky texture adds to the persistence. (JH)
Tank sample – this was due to be bottled September 2024. Fragrant and limey. So open and expressive, citrus, peach, even pear and a touch of white blossom. Creamy and vibrant at the same time. Pure, generous and open with a backbone of acidity that gives shape and length. Very gently chewy on the finish. Delicate but not a wall flower, with real persistence. (JH)
The 2023 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru comes from the middle of the valley, 35-year-old vines. It has a slightly chalky bouquet, touches of yellow flowers and fresh pear. The palate is fresh on the entry, and very linear in style (especially compared to the previous vintage), leading to a lemongrass-tinged finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Definitely this is worth seeking out.
