Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Clos Carelle Sous Chapelle from Jean-Marc Boillot was tight and just a tad reduced on the nose with raspberry coulis, a slight metallic scent and soy. The palate is sweet and feels quite extracted on the entry: thickly-layered and quite dense, though it is missing requisite complexity and nuance on the finish. Pushed a little too hard in the winery? Maybe give this a year or two in bottle to sort itself out.

Bright full red. Slightly reduced aromas of dark cherry and spices. At once dense and juicy, displaying lovely precision to its red berry and red cherry flavors. Sweetness of fruit nicely buffered by harmonious acidity. This firmly built, concentrated premier cru spreads out nicely to coat the mouth on the lingering finish.
Bright red. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, minerals and orange zest. Suave and concentrated, with excellent sappy lift to the flavors of red fruits, soil and pungent minerality. Finishes with firm but ripe tannins and a lovely light touch. This should be delicious with two years of cellaring.
