As usual, there's only one barrel of the 2022 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Haute Densité, a glorious wine that will richly reward anyone able to attain a bottle—and to exercise the patience required to enjoy it at its best. Unwinding in the glass with notes of sweet orchard fruit, orange oil, oyster shell, freshly baked bread and wheat toast, it's full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a deep and multidimensional core of fruit, racy acids and a long, chalky finish. It's the king of the cellar, but it's also the most reserved wine in the range and really needs some time to show all its cards.

5 Star Wine. Olivier Lamy has asked geologist Françoise Vannier to dig a trench in the plot so as to study the underlying profile. There is about 30cm of red soil on top of white soil with lots of little rocks, limestone downwash on a south facing hump, where the grapes ripen very quickly. The 2022 crop has been made in one 228-litre barrel and a wine globe. A fine pale colour. The bouquet is sensational in its refinement with perfect ripeness. Honeysuckle tendrils on a pure orchard fruit with some yellow plums as well. Dainty yet with incredible tenacity, and of course aftertaste.
