The 2013 Barolo Vigna Rionda is quite powerful and concentrated. It will be interesting to see if the 2013 acquires a measure of finesse during its aging. Today, it comes across as heavy and lacking in elegance. The flavor profile is also decidedly dark and brooding for a site that is capable of exquisite elegance. Given the quality and pedigree of this part of Rionda, this Barolo should be nothing less than absolutely stunning.

Serralunga d'Alba. Cask sample. Concentrated ruby. Tight and closed on the nose. Very compact and backward but with a hugely elegant yet firm tannic structure. Plenty of ripe fruit and yet contained. Gorgeous rich tannins on the finish. (WS)
