The 2014 Barolo VignaRionda Ester Canale Rosso is sort of sweet and sour at the same time and not totally aligned. Its plump fruit has some strange ripeness to it. It's not a bad wine, but it's not great either. It is meant for immediate or near-term drinking.

Pale brick-garnet. Old leather, mint touches and lots of earthy, chocolate character, over dried cherry and some rose-petal notes. Sour cherry, spice, old leather, subtle rose petal and smoke on the palate, wrapped around high, fine, classic Barolo tannins. Missing a little palate density, like many 2014s, but there's decent length. Should come around OK. (TJ)
The 2014 Barolo Vigna Rionda is the best wine Davide Rosso has made yet from his holdings in Vigna Rionda. Translucent and deeply expressive, the 2014 hits all the right notes. Rose petal, dried herb, spice and bright red-toned fruit take on that inner sweetness and perfume that is arguably the single most distinctive Rionda attribute. In the glass, the 2014 is nervous and also quite persistent, which is to say very much in the style of the year.
Serralunga d’Alba. Cask sample. Lush, concentrated ruby. Lots of depth and concentrated cherry on the nose with fine spice notes. Succulent and pure with compact, tightly built tannins. Great structure and lots of acidity embedded in the tight fruit. Gorgeous tannins. Needs more time. (WS)
