Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2012-2022, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Dec 2008

Serralunga d’Alba, 24 months barrique. Ripe and perfumed with lovely sweet spice. Chewy tannins but with good fruit to balance. A bit of a blunt instrument at the moment. (JH)

Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2012-2022, Jancis Robinson MW, Aug 2008

The Pira family began bottling their own wine only in 1995 after years of selling their grapes to other producers. Today, they have 8 hectares in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the 5 main Barolo villages. Its soil is composed of compact sandstone and clay, which produces particularly powerful and long-lived wines. Vines planted in 1960 on 1.5ha. Aged 2 years – 85% in botti (2000l), 15% in French oak barrels (not new). Powerfully spiced and dark fruited on the nose, attractive sweet dark fruit. Dusty. Dense and chewy and very firm but with fruit and freshness to balance. Massive grip at the moment but terrific fruit elasticity. (JH) (£290.00 ib Goedhuis)

The 2004 Barolo Margheria represents a powerful, classic expression of Serralunga Barolo. A massive wine, it possesses plenty of fruit supported by imposing structural material, showing superb energy, purity and focus. It is the finest Margheria from Pira I can recall, yet it will require substantial patience. It is aged in a combination of 500-liter barrels and larger casks.
