Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Volnay 1Er Cru Les Broillards from Louis Boillot has a vibrant red cherry and raspberry preserve-scented nose with still a little oak to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced, peppery entry. There is pleasant grip here, a more masculine Volnay that leans a little towards Pommard in style with an austere but appealing finish. This is a well crafted Volnay from Louis Boillot that I suspect may merit a higher mark in the future.

Manages to be both sweet and green on the nose with masses of tannin and a real attempt at volume on the palate. I'm not sure I would get it as a Volnay blind. It's much more stolid than most. Slightly tough tannins on the end. (JR)
(from 60-year-old vines): Brilliant medium ruby. Restrained aromas of black fruits and mint. Dark and brooding in the mouth, with a medicinal cast to the concentrated flavors of black fruits, violet and licorice; still plenty in reserve today. Very ripe and very black, finishing with firm, almost Pommard-like tannic structure and a juicy quality. This will need time.
The 2012 Volnay Les Brouillards is striking in its beauty. The Brouillards has all of the depth and richness of the other wines in the range, but is elevated by its energy and pure vibrancy. Dark cherry, plum, spices and rose petals add complexity on the chiseled finish. This is a brilliant showing.
