The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos was also showing brilliantly, soaring from the glass with a lively bouquet of pear, honeyed citrus fruits, peach, fresh mint and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied and textural but incisive, with racy acids, lovely depth at the core and a chalky finish.

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Tête du Clos 1er Cru, which comes from Morgeots (Leroux called it his "baby grand cru"), has a feisty blood orange and tangerine bouquet that bursts from the glass; plenty of energy here. The palate is very well balanced with a slightly honeyed entry, notes of orange peel and marmalade surfacing with aeration and enhancing the lightly spiced and quite persistent finish. Great length. This comes recommended.
A little closer to the village, above Morgeot. Part of Morgeot in fact. Very calcareous and much more so than the clay of Morgeot. No new oak. Only two barrels. Barrel sample, may be bottled in February. Very different and distinctive, super-salty and mineral on the nose. Herby citrus but it’s the saltiness that stands out. Seems to be all terroir and no oak. Terrific concentration and precision. Tight but succulent, so fresh and sinewy. ‘Baby grand cru’ says Leroux. (JH)
