Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2014-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2014

The 2003 Barolo Margheria, here in its first vintage, has stood the test of time, although elements of rusticity come through from time to time. Dark red cherry, plum, spices and iron flesh out in the glass. The big, imposing tannins will always remain firm in a nicely done Barolo to drink over the next 7-10 years or so. Luigi Scavino acquired his parcel in Margheria in 2002, a difficult year in which he made no wine from this site. The 2003 is the first release. Scavino aged the 2003 in a combination of casks and barriques.

Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2013-2020, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2007

The2003 Barolo Margheria is a new wine for the estate. It exhibits classic Serralunga notes in its dark fruit, iron, leather, tar and smoke. Made in more ample, concentrated style, it has enough fruit to stand up to the tannins and offers a lovely inner sweetness that carries through to the long fin ish. It is an outstanding effort.

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. Azelia remains a great source for relatively well-priced Barolos. In particular, the San Rocco, from a vineyard in Serralunga, is often one of the region’s top bottlings as it is again in 2003. Proprietor Luigi Scavino has a new Barolo this year, made from the Margheria vineyard, also in Serrlaunga.
