Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2014-2024, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, Apr 2012

The 2009 Volnay Clos de Chene adds cool, mineral infused layers to the opulent, generous style of the year. Dark red cherries, flowers, graphite and mint wrap around the fleshy, hugely rewarding finish. This vibrant, beautifully balanced Volnay has more than enough depth and freshness to drink well for a number of years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Bright full red. More vibrant on the nose than the village offering, showing sour cherry, minerals, flowers and some spicy oak. Juicy and tangy in the mouth, with very good definition to the raspberry, cherry and mineral flavors. Still a bit youthfully imploded, and distinctly less fat than it appeared to be from barrel. Firm acidity gives the wine a slightly tight finish, suggesting that four or five years of patience will be rewarded. This vineyard includes Lafon's last vines on SO4 rootstock; he has been replanting them bit by bit, and the average age of the vines is now about 30 years.

Deep red with ruby highlights. Wilder on the nose than the village wine, hinting at black cherry, game and smoky oak. Fat, silky and sweet, with nicely integrated acidity framing the mineral and chocolate flavors. Finishes long, with lush tannins and good backbone.

Not racked. Quite substantial. Serious! Bright cherries and something Indian spicy – cumin? Lots of interest and brightness though no gratuitous sweetness. Bright fruit. Firm and interesting. Chew. Cool terroir and lovely tension. Long. (JR)
