Reticent nose hints at lemon, menthol and crushed stone, plus a whiff of smoke. Much less opulent than the Meursault premier crus, showing strong minerality and a hint of white flowers. Finishes quite brisk, with a lime flavor and a peppery quality. Far less exotic than it appeared to be from barrel last spring. This will need patience.

The 2009 Puligny-Montrachet Les Chalumeaux is another pretty, textured white layered with expressive fruit. It shows excellent brightness in its white stone fruit, pears and flowers. The aromas and flavors flow gracefully to the inviting, focused finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012+. I found myself most attracted to the entry-level wines at Matrot. A number of the basic offerings are absolutely joyous, but the more important wines aren’t markedly more complex in my view. Only the villages-level Meursault is disappointing. Light and minerally. But with a sweet undertow. Not quite refreshing enough. Also pretty chewy on the end. (JR)
Slightly hazy color. Musky, aromatic nose combines soft citrus fruits, exotic apricot, crushed stone and flowers. Rich and ripe on entry, then conveys an almost sweet impression in the middle palate before turning lemony and brisk on the back end. A lush, rather charming wine with notes of tropical fruits and almond flower, and a lightly lactic buttery nuance.
