Punteggio 86/100 · Da bere 2020-2022, Neal Martin, Jun 2020

The 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru from Fichet is burdened with too much reduction on the nose, obfuscating the terroir expression. The palate is sour on the entry, showing moderate weight, but again, the reduction makes this Les Referts feel a bit manipulated and ersatz. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2010 white burgundy tasting in London.

Strong matchstick aroma! Good middle core of ripe fruit. Very fine, fruity and rewarding, provided you don’t hate reduction. Mouth-filling with great, juicy balance. Quite long. (JR)

Bright pale yellow. Wild, musky aromas of peach, ginger and charred oak. Concentrated, tactile and powerful, with a saline minerality and intriguing soil tones. Chewy, rich and mouthfilling but with energy too. This big boy conveys a noble earthy rusticity and finishes long and edge-free. Enjoy this now or over the next ten years.

The 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Referts is big, rich and boisterous, and as such, stands apart from the rest of the wines in the lineup. Smoke, incense, slate and juicy apricots burst from the glass in this highly expressive, sumptuous wine. The 2010 impresses for its rich, layered personality, but there is plenty of underlying support for this to develop nicely over the coming years. This is an absolutely gorgeous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2013+. This is a gorgeous set of wines from Jean-Philippe Fichet. The 2010s have great energy and freshness. Much of that is, of course, the personality of the vintage, but Fichet is also among the growers who use a fair bit of larger 600-liter barrels, which helps maintain a fair amount of cut and sheer energy.
